It was a lavish, glamorous and memorable night when aspiring actress, filmmaker and model Megan Young from the
Philippines was crowned Miss World 2013 in Nusa Dua on Saturday night.
Young, the 23-year-old new Miss World, has been in the entertainment world since she was 15 and was speechless when Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu put the crown on her head while the crowd cheered.
“Thank you so much to everyone for choosing me. I promise to be the best Miss World ever,” cried Young when she received the title. Runner-up went to Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, while Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, grabbed third place.
Despite harsh and continuous protests from Indonesia’s Islamist hardliners calling the pageant non-Islamic and against Indonesian religious, social and cultural values, the pageant ran very smoothly on the island of paradise, with extra security measures, of course.
The 127 beautiful and smart Miss World candidates participated in a large variety of contests, social work, cultural and social activities, such as Beauty with a Purpose, Talent Show and Top Model, while competing in Bali since early this month. Miss Nepal, Ishani Shresta, won Beauty with a Purpose with her compelling dentistry program in her country.
Indonesian contestant Vania Larissa had to be satisfied with her inclusion in the ten most talented candidates in the Talent Show session.
The most awaited Miss World moment — the crowning, was over, but Bali had gained wide international coverage, this time for a happy moment that will certainly boost its image as a top cultural and tourism destination across the world.
Meanwhile, Indonesia also gained world attention, regardless of the protests from some community groups.
